Dr Bhadran Bose
Dr Bose is a Senior Staff Specialist at Nepean and Blue Mountains Local Health District with a special interest in glomerular diseases. He is also a clinical lecturer at the University of Sydney. He completed his Glomerular Disease fellowship at the University of Toronto, Canada. He is currently pursuing his PhD at the University of Queensland on “Treatment of Glomerular Diseases," with a particular focus on Membranous nephropathy.
He is a member of the AKTN Glomerular Disease working group. Dr Bose has participated in numerous clinical trials as the principal investigator for glomerular diseases, including IgA nephropathy, FSGS, and aHUS.
Dr Kate Robson
Dr Kate Robson is a nephrologist at Alfred Health and adjunct lecturer at Monash University in Melbourne. Kate has a particular interest in advancing the care of patients with immune-mediated kidney disease, and was awarded the ANZSN Young Investigator Award 2023 for her PhD project in cellular mechanisms of autoimmunity at Monash University. She has experience as an investigator in global clinical trials in kidney diseases. Kate is founding program director of GlomCon Fellowship, an innovative online education initiative nurturing the development of nephrologists across the Asia-Pacific region. Kate completed a Masters in History of Medicine at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, researching the history of chronic illness care, and is a member of the Medical History Society of Victoria. An accomplished musician, Kate performs with Melbourne’s Corpus Medicorum Orchestra, and enjoys music, reading, walking and swimming with her three young children.
Dr Holly Hutton
Holly has a clinical and research interest in glomerulonephritis and is also a keen educator in the area. She has completed a PhD in renal immunology relating to ANCA vasculitis at Monash University, and works at Alfred Health in Melbourne where she is the clinical lead for GN. She has recently undertaken a sabbatical in Vancouver, Canada, pursuing both her interests in clinical aspects of GN and spending time in the mountains with her family.
A/Prof Muh Geot Wong
Associate Professor Muh Geot Wong MBBS, PhD, FRACP
Dr Wong is an Associate Professor in Medicine, University of Sydney, Senior Consultant Nephrologist and Director of Renal Research at the Concord Repatriate General Hospital, Sydney, He is a Clinician researcher with a strong interest in understanding the pathomechanism of kidney fibrosis and has actively promoted the development of both clinical and pre-clinical research in delaying chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression in glomerular diseases, including IgA nephropathy, FSGS, diabetic nephropathy, and management of cardiovascular complications associated with CKD. He is a steering committee member of the Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) Clinical Trial group that will develop a coordinated and system-wide approach to clinical trials management within the SLHD and provide strategic direction for future initiatives. He co-Chair the local organising committee for the Annual Scientific Meeting, Australia New Zealand Society of Nephrology, Sydney 2022, and is the current Chair of the Education Committee for the Asia Pacific Society of Nephrology (ANZSN). He has served as Chair of the Oceania South East Asia Regional Board, International Society of Nephrology, and is a Honorary Executive Officer for the ANZSN.
Dr Hugh McCarthy
Dr Hugh McCarthy (PhD FRCPCH FRACP) is a full time paediatric nephrologist and clinical researcher within the University Of Sydney and Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network. Hugh established and runs the NSW paediatric renal genetic clinical service. His research focuses on the care of children living with rare and genetic renal disease and the study of the pathogenesis of nephrotic syndrome both genetic and immune mediated. Hugh developed the UK National Registry of Rare Renal Disease (RADAR) as part of his PhD; he is developing the equivalent in Australia – Australian Registry of Rare and Genetic Kidney Disease (www.arrk.org.au) to provide a trial ready platform for national cohort build and provide an informatic hub for families. His research spans the study of the psychosocial burden of genetic testing in the renal clinic to laboratory based analysis of the molecular pathways of immune mediated nephrotic syndrome together with the identification of novel genes associated with inherited kidney disease.
Prof Angela Makris
Professor Angela Makris is a clinician researcher. She is a consultant Nephrologist and Obstetric Physician at South west Sydney based at Liverpool Hospital and undertakes research at the Heart Research Institute and University of Western Sydney. She is the immediate-past president of the Society of Obstetric Medicine Australia and New Zealand (SOMANZ) and the executive of the Women’s Health Initiative Translational Unit (WHITU). Her research interests include therapies for the treatment and prevention of preeclampsia as well as post-partum management and assessment. Angela has ongoing roles in national and international guidelines in hypertension and renal replacement therapy in pregnancy.
Dr Jennifer Li
Dr Jen Li is a clinician-researcher at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research with an interest in kidney transplantation, precision medicine and cellular therapies. She practices as a transplant nephrologist at Westmead Hospital and is a clinical lecturer at the University of Sydney. Her research interests include Kidney transplantation, Genomics and Spatial transcriptomics, Cell death.
A/Prof Jessica Ryan
A/Prof Jessica Ryan is a staff Nephrologist at Monash Health and and Clinical Adjunct Associate Professor at Monash University, Department of Medicine and currently leads the Glomerulonephritis service at Monash Health. In addition, Jessica participates in the Monash Vasculitis, Renal Transplantation and Renal Genetics services. Passionate about education, especially with regards to rare kidney diseases, her post-doctoral research interests include ANCA-associated vasculitis and Glomerulonephritis. Dr Ryan has been involved in numerous clinical trials as a Principal and Sub-investigator in diseases such as ANCA-associated vasculitis, IgAN, membranous GN, aHUS and C3GN. Dr Ryan is the current Secretary of the Australian and New Zealand Vasculitis Society (ANZVASC) and chair of the ANZVASC Education committee.
Dr Richard Phoon
Richard is the Senior Medical Advisor at Westmead Hospital and has worked as a Nephrologist at Westmead/Blacktown Hospitals since 2007. Previous appointments include Treasurer of ANZSN, Chair of the Advanced Training Committee of Nephrology, Director of the Kidney School programme, and Treasurer/Secretary of Ballet Without Borders. A longstanding member of the PEAK Committee (KHA), he is also Co-Chair of the Single Digital Patient Record Renal and Dialysis Working Group, a member of the Independent Hospital and Aged Cared Pricing Authority Clinical Advisory Committee and an Elected Councillor for HCF. He is principal investigator on several international clinical trials, with recent publications related to IgA nephropathy and various CARI clinical practice guidelines. He maintains active personal interests in his family, fencing, cooking and ballet.
Dr Sharon Ford
Dr Sharon Ford is the Deputy Director of Nephrology at The Austin Hospital, Melbourne, where she oversees the Glomerulonephritis program, the CKD program and Nephrology clinical trials.
Sharon competed a PhD in 2023 at the Monash University Centre for Inflammatory Diseases investigating innate immune mechanisms of the pathogenesis of MPO-ANCA vasculitis, under the supervision of Dr Kim O’Sullivan, Professors Richard Kitching and Stephen Holdsworth and Dr Shaun Summers. Sharon was awarded the ANZSN Young Investigator award for her PhD research.
Sharon is ANZSN President-Elect having previously undertaken ANZSN roles including Honorary Executive Officer, Councillor and Deputy Chair of Scientific Program and Awards Committee. Sharon is also the ANZSN representative on the Organ Tissue Authority Transplant Advisory Group.
